Uiltrasporti Sardegna said it was in favor of the increasingly concrete hypotheses of construction in the metropolitan area of Cagliari of a plant and a network for the supply and distribution of natural gas, complementary and - in perspective - alternative to other fuels with a view to energy transition .

However, being an important choice with a great impact from many points of view for the territory and the repercussions in the social, economic, logistic and environmental spheres, according to the union, some aspects must be evaluated in the best possible way.

In the first place, such an important infrastructure deserves to be placed in the best possible position, so that it is not incompatible with the existing port and logistic activities, which are currently expanding. The reference is to the hypothesis of positioning the plant on the eastern quay of the Port Channel, just 500 meters from the existing activities (Grendi, Remosa) and the fishing village, and just one kilometer from the center of Cagliari.

"Therefore, while sharing the importance of the project and the positive effects on employment and economic development connected to it, we believe that the work can be positioned elsewhere, for example in the large spaces present in the Macchiareddu Industrial Area (in which there is also a pier at sea), or in any case in a place that does not damage existing port activities or possible new settlements ”, explains Uiltrasporti.

“Furthermore, we do not underestimate the fact that during the gas unloading operations the naval transit in and out of the canal port would be prevented, creating another disincentive to the relaunch of the Transhipment in the Industrial Port of Cagliari. For all these reasons, Uiltrasporti shares the perplexities expressed by the operators present in the Port Channel, and by the community of the inhabitants of the Fishing Village ”, concludes the union's note.
