The referral to trial has been requested for the 34 people falsely listed in the register of suspects in the “Monte Nuovo” investigation , the investigation by the DDA of the Public Prosecutor's Office and the ROS of the Carabinieri which hypothesizes, for some, the accusation of having constituted and promised a mafia-type association aimed at committing crimes against the public administration.
Nine people are accused of the most serious crime , including the doctor Tomaso Cocco, the former regional councilor Gabriella Murgia and the rector of the University of Sassari, Gavino Mariotti, as well as some well-known names from the criminal past, such as Nicolò Cossu (known as Cioccolato), Tonino Crissantu, Giovanni Mercurio and Antonio Giuseppe Mesina. Mafia association also suspected for Battista Mele and Paolo Murgia.
As of September 2023, the investigation had led to 31 precautionary custody orders (13 in prison and 18 under house arrest), among them many prominent names from the island's managerial and administrative world, alongside leading figures from the Sardinian criminal scene. With the investigation closed, the prosecutor Emanuele Secci has now requested the referral to trial and the preliminary hearing judge Luca Melis has set the date for the start of the preliminary hearing for February 10. Among those under investigation for minor crimes are Alessandro Arca, Giorgio Carboni, Maurizio Vito Cossu, Andrea Daga, Alessia, Vincenzo and Alice Deidda, Antonio Fadda, Mario Antonio Floris, Giuseppe Paolo Frongia, Anna, Salvatore and Raffaele Gioi, Marco Lai, Tomas Littarru, Antonio Marteddu, Riccardo Mercuriu, Serafino Monni, Desiderio Mulas, Marco Muntoni, Antonio Michele Pinna, Alessandro Rocca, Paolo Sale, Marzo Zanardi and the manager Massimo Temussi.
