"Monkeypox is a global health emergency."
This was stated by the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at a press conference. This is the WHO's highest alert level.
The increase in monkeypox cases ( WHAT IS IT ) also affects the European Union. "I am concerned about the growing number of monkeypox cases in the EU, we now have over 7,000 , an increase of almost 50% compared to a week ago", said EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides in recent days.
To cope with the emergency, the EU has secured another 54,530 doses of the vaccine , now bringing the total number of doses purchased for member states to respond to the ongoing epidemic to over 163,000 . The purchase was finalized by the Authority for Health Preparation and Response (Hera).
Deliveries of vaccines "will continue to be made in the coming weeks and months and for the rest of the year", reads a note from the EU Executive.
