artistic, typical and traditional Made in Sardinia and Made in Italy
they will be even more protected and safeguarded thanks to a new European quality mark, Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) , a recognition which until now has been reserved only for agri-food products, but which is also essential against product counterfeiting and falsification.
To date, however, only two Sardinian companies have filed the specifications for future recognition.
Also for this reason - with the aim of promoting and informing - a round table entitled "Ancient Hands and Modern Hearts: Craftsmanship to be Rediscovered. Certifying Value: Tradition, Innovation and the Future of Sardinian Craftsmanship" was organized in Ollastra (Oristano) , organized by the Municipality of Ollastra (Oristano), and moderated by the journalist Simona Scioni, as part of the initiatives of the "Fiera di San Marco", in the presence, among others, of the mayor Osvaldo Congiu, the Secretary of Confartigianato Oristano, Marco Franceschi, the Officials of the Regional Department of Craftsmanship, Sarà Olla and Raimondo Mandis, the Director of the Chamber of Commerce of Cagliari-Oristano, Stefano Carta, the Official of Confartigianato Nuoro, Francesco Frau, the goldsmith artisan from Fonni, Raffaele Pirisi and numerous other artisans of the artistic, typical and traditional from all over Sardinia.
THE BRAND – From next December, as mentioned, even Sardinian companies of artistic, typical and traditional craftsmanship will have the opportunity to protect their products and to see the specific value of their work recognized, by submitting an application for registration of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) . From the carpets of Sarule to the baskets of Castelsardo, from the wedding rings of Fonni to the ceramics of Oristano or Assemini, not forgetting the knives of Pattada and Arbus, but also the wooden masks of Mamoiada, the saddlery of Santu Lussurgiu, the carpets and tapestries of Fonni, just to give a few examples, will be able to access this new form of protection, valid throughout the European Union.
The innovation, introduced by Regulation (EU) 2023/2411, expands the historic system of protection of geographical indications, extending it for the first time to those products whose quality, reputation or characteristics are strongly linked to a specific geographical origin .
THE REQUIREMENTS – Confartigianato Sardegna recalled that, in order to benefit from the IGP registration, the products must respect three fundamental requirements :
- Being from a specific place, region, or country
- Possess a quality, reputation or other characteristic essentially attributable to their geographical origin
- Provide that at least one stage of production takes place in the defined geographical area.
CONTRIBUTIONS – There is also the concrete interest of the Regional Council in this activity which, on the proposal of the Regional Councillor for Crafts, Franco Cuccureddu, has allocated 750 thousand euros in favour of regional companies operating in the craft sector for the achievement of quality certifications and certifications and licenses.

THE MEETING – «Crafts and agriculture are two very important sectors, united by tradition but also by the desire to innovate – said Osvaldo Congiu, Mayor of Ollastra – for this reason we are waiting to know in depth the directives that will regulate the law for crafts that will give energy back to this sector».
