149 municipalities in Sardinia will be called to the polls on Sunday, June 7th and Monday, June 8th, 2026, to renew their mayors and municipal councils. Among these is Elmas , where—as resolved by the Regional Council— the municipal council has been dissolved . At the same time, the executive has appointed Remo Ortu as special commissioner for the provisional management of the institution . The position will remain in effect until the first round of elections for the renewal of the ordinary bodies.

In municipalities where it will be necessary, a possible runoff election has already been scheduled for Sunday, June 21st and Monday, June 22nd, 2026. The decision was made today by the Regional Council , which approved the resolution proposed by Councilor for Local Government Francesco Spanedda . "Municipal elections represent a fundamental moment for the democratic life of our communities ," Spanedda stated. "They are the opportunity for citizens to directly choose who will lead their cities and define the direction of local governments for the coming years."

The 2026 administrative round concerns municipalities called to renew their bodies due to the natural expiration of their mandates or for other reasons established by law. Specifically, 27 are in the Metropolitan City of Cagliari , 27 in the Metropolitan City of Sassari, 13 in the province of Gallura in Northeast Sardinia, 20 in the Nuoro area, 7 in Ogliastra, 38 in the Oristano area, 11 in the Medio Campidano area, and 6 in the Sulcis Iglesiente area. "With the selection of the dates, the process leading up to the vote begins, with the aim of ensuring full compliance with the regulations and the smooth running of the elections, ensuring the territories receive all the necessary institutional support," the councilor added. Now, Regional President Alessandra Todde will have to sign the decree calling the elections, which will then be forwarded to the prefects of Sardinia for their relevant formalities.
