Screenings, concerts by renowned artists, performances, and guests with a wealth of stories to share. After a three-month music festival that concluded last December, the Karel Music Expo returns in 2026 with " Sound and Vision ": three meetings dedicated to the intertwining of cinema, music and subcultures are scheduled, which from 20 February to 14 March will enliven the portrait room of Palazzo Siotto , in Cagliari in via dei Genovesi 114 .
The three events will explore three cities of Italian music: Florence, Bologna, and Rome, each representing a different era in the history of Italian culture. Organized by Vox Day and with artistic direction by Davide Catinari , "Sound and Vision" will explore the urban jungles where subcultures and avant-garde movements have always thrived , featuring arthouse films, performances, and live music, with the title paying homage to the great Bowie.
February 20th
The first meeting will open with a screening of " Uscivamo molto la notte " (We Went Out a Lot at Night), at 7:30 pm . Directed by Stefano Pistolini , the film will immerse us in the Florence of the early 1980s, when medieval Athens became the cradle of the "Rock Renaissance." This documentary captures the underground movement that soon gave birth to the Italian new wave, led by the prophet Bruno Casini and his disciples Piero Pelù and Federico Fiumani . This is the story of an artistic generation, spanning a decade of ephemeral yet vibrant creativity.
Pistolini will also be a guest of the evening , engaging in conversation with the audience and journalist Claudio Loi of Sa Scena. To conclude the first evening, a concert by Alessandro and Ludovico Muroni will begin at 9:15 pm : the former is a singer-songwriter, writer, and icon of Sassari's new wave, the latter a trumpeter and horn player for Charme de Caroline and Magnificat, and the two will join forces for a stand-out live performance .
February 27th
Also at 7:30 PM , the second evening will move to the Emilian capital of the years immediately after '77, with " Going Underground ," a documentary on the pioneers Gaznevada directed by Lisa Biosi . In a city suspended between political commitment and social escapism, the Bolognese group took it upon themselves to translate Italian punk from a demented Skiantos-style rock to more sophisticated sounds, be they post-punk, fierce hardcore, or soft new wave.
Between the golden age of DAMS, the art of maestro Pazienza , and London punk, and between the search for refuge from repression and the generational drama of heroin, the film will be narrated by music producer Oderso Rubini , once again accompanied by Loi. This will be followed by an audiovisual performance by Perry Frank , once again at 9:15 PM , featuring his abstract, ethereal environmental and drone landscapes .
And on March 14th
In its usual 7:30 PM slot, "Sound and Vision" kicks off its final date with " Rome As You Are ," a documentary co-directed by Daniela Giombini , Tino Franco , and Marco Porsia : a visual tale of Nirvana's unique and unrepeatable tour of Italy , just before the height of their fame. The protagonist is Giombini herself, responsible for Cobain and his band's Italian tour, including packed arenas and precious, intimate live performances, as well as the return to Rome of the founder of Nirvana's label, Sub Pop . Together, Bruce Pavitt and Giombini return to the places visited by the band, against a sonic backdrop entrusted to the Italian indie scene, which grew and is now inspired by the hues of grunge.
Giombini herself will be a guest commentator, introduced by film critic Greta Boschetto and in conversation with radio host Dario Calfapietra . The closing act will be Don Leone , a duo consisting of Donato Cherchi (vocals and harmonica) and Matteo Leone (guitar and drums), who together play a minimal, visceral blues style rooted in the traditions of Mississippi and Sardinia. They will perform their recently released album, " Welcome to the South West 2.0 ," live.
