A construction worker, Salvatore Calignano, 61, died in hospital after being found unconscious on the street in Caivano yesterday afternoon.

Transferred to San Giuliano Hospital with serious injuries from multiple traumas, doctors' attempts to save his life were in vain.

The Carabinieri are investigating the incident. It's possible the man may have been the victim of a workplace accident, which prevented the alarm from being raised.

"If it's true that they abandoned him on the street, I want justice for my husband. He didn't deserve to be treated like this," said the worker's disheartened wife, Carmela, 56.
