Tommaso Bisciari, the 14-year-old who died yesterday at school from a sudden illness, had been waiting for a heart transplant for more than two years .
The tragedy took place in front of his classmates from his first year of high school, at the Olivetti High School in Fano (Pesaro and Urbino).
The young man was not feeling well and had asked to go to the bathroom, once he left the classroom he fell and the thud immediately attracted the attention of teachers and classmates, who found him lying on the floor . Attempts at resuscitation, first by the teachers, then by the 118 staff who also used a defibrillator, were useless. The doctors took the boy to the garden and attempted the last desperate cardiac maneuvers, under the eyes of Tommaso's parents, who were alerted and arrived immediately on the scene. There was nothing that could be done.
The disease was discovered in 2021: " We had noticed that Tommaso, when he rode his bike, had a lot of shortness of breath. A check-up revealed that the cells in his heart were stiffer than normal and for this reason the heart was not pumping blood well ," his father told Il Resto del Carlino. Tommaso had been on the waiting list for two and a half years at Sant'Orsola in Bologna for a heart transplant: " They told us to always be ready, that the new heart could arrive at any moment ."
In addition to his parents and friends, Tommaso leaves behind two brothers. He was one of 707 patients waiting for a heart transplant in Italy (11 in Sardinia), with an average waiting time of three and a half years , according to the Ministry of Health website.
