The NAS Carabinieri of Caserta executed a precautionary custody order issued by the investigating judge of the Santa Maria Capua Vetere court, at the request of the local public prosecutor's office. The order suspended six healthcare workers, including medical directors and nurses from the local health authority (ASL), for one year .
The various crimes charged involve false declarations or certifications and aggravated fraud against public bodies. Investigations revealed that some employees routinely left work during office hours to attend to private matters , despite being officially listed as being on duty.
The investigation, according to the Carabinieri, has uncovered particularly serious issues, such as mutual favors among nursing staff to evade internal controls . The officers determined that two of the suspects regularly took turns clocking in, pretending to be on duty when they were not. On one occasion, one of the two nurses went to the ward solely to register his colleague's presence, despite the fact that he was officially on sick leave.
The man was then followed by the Carabinieri while he was shopping inside a phone shop in a local mall. A doctor, after checking in for a professional development session, left to go to the barbershop first , and then returned home.
