The Rigopiano Memory Garden is born in the area – Farindola territory in the province of Pescara – where the hotel stood that, on January 18, 2017, was overwhelmed and destroyed by an avalanche that caused the death of 29 people. The inauguration of the work will be held on Sunday at 4:00 pm.

In the first lot of the Garden, the main nucleus of the project, the statue of the Madonnina stands out in the center: it comes from Sardinia, as a gift from the community of Orosei . Around it, an artistic installation that includes 29 blocks of marble, one for each victim of the tragedy, and a slab with all their names, placed on a stone wall.

This morning in the Pescara Region, the project was presented by, among others, the mayor of Farindola, Luca Labricciosa, the architect Roberto Chimisso, designer of the work, and Emira De Acetis, representing the Committee of the victims' families. The meeting was also attended by regional councilor Vincenzo D'Incecco, first signatory of the regional law project n. 27/2022, which provided for the establishment and construction of the Garden of Memory. The work will continue shortly with a second lot that will include improvement and finishing interventions .

"It will be a moment of great significance, not only for the community of Farindola, but for all of Abruzzo," said Mayor Labricciosa. " Finally, the victims' families will have a place to bring flowers, to gather together . The Garden of Memory is a symbol of respect and remembrance." The Region has allocated 90,000 euros, in addition to a further 10,000 euros in voluntary donations.

"We imagine this place as a space for reflection, especially for young people, so that what happened will not be forgotten," concluded Labricciosa. "The regional law," said D'Incecco, "prescribes that the Garden be a space dedicated to awareness-raising activities, public meetings and moments of collective memory. It is a heritage that belongs to the entire Abruzzo community ."
