"Bossi, Bossi. Free Padania." This was the chant chanted in the square overlooking the Abbey of San Giacomo in Pontida by several hundred League militants who had gathered to attend the funeral of Umberto Bossi , the historic leader and founder of the party , who died at the age of 84.

A banner was hung on one side of the abbey, reading: "Thank you, Chief, your story will always live with us. " There was also no shortage of the "hard and pure" slogans from the origins of the Lombard League, such as "Secession!" and "Let's burn the tricolor."

Present at the function were Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti (wearing a green tie), Matteo Salvini (wearing a green shirt), and governors Luca Zaia and Attilio Fontana . The current secretary of the Northern League was challenged by some militants , while applause was directed at Zaia.
