Shortly after midnight, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp slowly resumed functioning. The blackout, which occurred across Europe and the US, lasted over five hours and is the biggest outage for the social media giant since 2008.

The "down", explained Santosh Janardhan, Facebook's vice president of infrastructure, would have been caused by changes in the configuration of the routers that coordinate network traffic between its data centers.
