He was informed of his parents' suicide in prison, where he has been held for a week on charges of killing his wife, Federica Torzullo, with more than twenty stab wounds and burying her body in a plot of land next to the family business.
Claudio Carlomagno, after learning of the deaths of his mother Maria and father Pasquale, is under close surveillance in the Civitavecchia prison. His defense attorney, Andrea Miroli, reported the news, explaining that his "thoughts" are now not only with himself and "how he will cope with this terrible news," but also with his ten-year-old son, who in just a few days lost his mother, grandparents, and "for a long time" his father. According to Aldo Di Giacomo, secretary of the prison police union Sappe, the man is "desperate," has asked to see his son, and threatened suicide. As is usual in these cases, strict prison protocols have been implemented to prevent possible acts of self-harm.
"This case demonstrates more than ever that even the family members of those who commit such a serious crime are victims," the lawyer states, "victims of a crime whose consequences painfully extend even to those who bear no responsibility for it, a catabasis, a descent into hell that they tragically managed to endure." He believes that "respect and privacy are needed" regarding the "reasons behind this terrible act," explained in a letter to his other son. And he issues a warning: "Unfortunately, even yesterday, messages like 'that woman was right to kill herself, having given birth to a monster' were still being read on social media. Reading this, and knowing how media pressure can disturb the consciences of those who find themselves living through these terrible situations, perhaps we should all practice collective pedagogy to ensure that certain events do not overflow the strictly legal confines ."
The autopsies for the husband and wife are expected to be ordered today. They have been transferred to the Sapienza Institute of Forensic Medicine. The tests could be conducted Tuesday. Investigators have no doubt that the couple committed suicide. Perhaps the couple couldn't handle the pain, the comments, the suspicious glances. The alarm was raised when the couple's other son found a farewell letter at their home in Rome from his parents, who had decided to return to Anguillara after spending a few days with him in the capital. At that point, the worried man contacted an aunt, but it was already too late. On Saturday evening, the Carabinieri conducted extensive searches of the couple's home and seized the messages left by the spouses.
Meanwhile, the investigation continues to clarify what investigators consider to be "grey areas" in Carlomagno's confession and to rule out any possible involvement of other individuals in the aftermath of the femicide. On Wednesday, the Carabinieri are expected to return with RIS experts to the Anguillara house where Claudio Carlomagno and Federica Torzullo lived to conduct a unique investigation , including on the car. The search for the murder weapon is also ongoing. In recent days, Carabinieri from Rome's Underwater Unit have concentrated on the spot indicated by the arrested man. Using metal detectors, they scanned a stream in a remote area of Osteria Nuova. However, the search has been unsuccessful.
Dismayed by the latest dramatic developments in the municipality in the province of Rome, where Charlemagne's mother, Maria Messenio, had been councilor for security until she resigned immediately after her son's arrest, Mayor Angelo Pizzigallo emphasized in a post that "in the face of such enormous tragedies, words struggle to find space."
