The American sergeant major who has been missing since July 23 is alive, although in a state of severe dehydration. Joseph Miele, 32 years old, had gone for a walk in the woods with his dog, then had not returned to the USAF base in Aviano, where he works, and when he was absent at roll call the alarm was raised.

Once the family was notified, searches began entrusted to the Alpine Rescue technicians and the Maniago firefighters in the Andreis area (Pordenone), where the car was found.

One of the man's brothers arrived from the United States to join the searches and yesterday morning, in a wood, found Joseph. He was alive but very dehydrated. A helicopter recovered him and took him first to the base camp, then to the hospital.

However, there was no trace of the dog.

The circumstances of the disappearance, and also of the singular discovery by the brother, are being examined by the police.
