The turning point in the investigation into the Garlasco murder, which has Andrea Sempio under investigation, lies in the wiretaps collected 10 years ago, despite the initial investigation into him being dropped in 2017. In the final report from the Milan Carabinieri on the murder of Chiara Poggi, there is a chapter titled "Re-listening to the Wiretaps," and in this section of the report, the investigators state that "the investigations conducted in just three months between late 2016 and early 2017 by the Pavia Prosecutor's Office undoubtedly represented a pivotal moment, not only for a possible alternative reconstruction of the dynamics of Chiara Poggi's murder," but have also become crucial in the ongoing proceedings.
In a wiretap from February 9, 2017, for example, Andrea, his father Giuseppe, and his mother Daniela are in the car discussing the results of a conversation with the lawyer, and the father says: "They even found phone calls from Andrea late at night."
The mother is astonished. "Like Andrea's phone calls?" She replies: "Basically, these investigators basically dug up some old phone records where, like nine months earlier, I was calling around 1:00 AM." "And who were you calling around 1:00 AM?" the parents ask: "I supposedly called the Poggi house around 1:00 AM. But," he (the lawyer, ed.) says to me, "Did Marco call home using your cell phone? Probably, but I don't remember if I lent him my cell phone. It could be, who the f... remembers." Taking into account the date of Sempio's interrogation and his father's testimony (February 10, 2017), the intercepted phone calls reveal two things for the investigators: "Since the evening of February 9, Andrea Sempio was aware of certain aspects and elements reported in the motion and related attachments presented by Stasi's defense."
Furthermore: "By the father, Giuseppe,'s admission, they were already aware, at least from the arguments and questions he was allegedly asked." "In this scenario," the investigators emphasize, "however, it must always be remembered that the Sempios were already in illicit possession of Stasi's lawyers' complaint at least since January 17, 2017." It is true that the press had revealed that Stasi's mother had filed a complaint against Sempio, and various articles referred to the man's phone calls to the Poggi home: "But never was there any reference to phone calls made at night, as instead emerged from the transcribed wiretaps and as reported in the report of the investigative agency appointed by Stasi's defense," the Carabinieri write. There are three phone calls: January 21, 2007, at 12:43 AM; July 14, at 1:04 AM; and August 4, at 1:05 AM, the same year Chiara Poggi was killed.
