"We are all drops in the great ocean. All lives deserve respect. That day I could have been less impulsive and more thoughtful."
These are the spontaneous statements made this morning in court, before the Milan Surveillance Court, by Mario Roggero , the 72-year-old jeweler from Cuneo who was definitively sentenced to 14 years and nine months for killing two robbers and wounding a third who had attacked his jewelry store in April 2021.
His words were reported by lawyer Stefano Marcolini.
Roggero recalled that "he's now been in detention for two months, and that during this time he's had time to think and has begun a process of critical reconsideration of his conduct." And that, excluding the words "repentance" and "apology," which "he didn't even utter," he used the metaphor that "we are all a drop in the ocean" and that "all lives deserve respect."
The defense attorney then added that he found the jeweler "thinner" but still "combative." "He still has the soul of a person who believes justice can give him something," he continued. "This something, in this case, is the subject of the request we have made to the Surveillance Court."
This morning, the hearing began on the second request for a deferred sentence related to the pardon application; the first was filed in Turin and was rejected . Roggero, detained in Bollate, appeared in court, and his lawyer submitted a fifteen-page brief asking the panel to decide on the merits of the request, pending President Mattarella's ruling.
The prosecutor, Emma Gambardella, proposed that the request be inadmissible given that a ruling on the matter has already been issued by the Turin Supervisory Court, which Roggero will appeal. The judges have reserved their decision.
