A 48-year-old resident of the Reggio Emilia ceramics district was reported by the Scandiano Carabinieri on charges of damaging and then setting fire to Santa Claus's house set up in Piazza Duca D'Aosta in the Emilian town.
The flames reached the windows of neighboring apartments. The police identified the man thanks to surveillance cameras, which apparently captured a young man with a cigarette running away shortly before the fire broke out.
The 48-year-old offered no explanation for his actions. The man, it was learned, had already been reported last August for a similar incident: he set fire to a garbage bin in the parking lot behind a supermarket in a shopping center.
The flames damaged two vehicles belonging to the Auser association, one of which was completely destroyed. Firefighters intervened in both cases to put out the flames and secure the areas.
