It lasted 12 years but now the story involving the two marines Salvatore Girone and Massimiliano Latorre seems to have come to an end. The investigating judge of Rome has in fact closed the investigation into the case that saw them accused of the murder of two Indian fishermen which took place in February 2012 off the coast of Kerala, India.
Already in December the then prosecutor Michele Prestipino and the deputy Erminio Amelio had asked the judge to drop the charges against the two Navy riflemen: the picture of the evidence collected in recent years, it was said, was not sufficient to ensure the establishment of a process.
"I am satisfied - commented the lawyer Fabio Anselmo, defender of Latorre - but also curious to read the decree with which the investigating judge closed this investigation. I hope it will restore justice and truth to Massimiliano Latorre after 12, very long, years".
“An authentic ordeal - the Girone lawyers, Fabio Federico and Michele Cinquepalmi define it - endured by Salvatore Girone with dignity and pride that have honored the whole of Italy: in the end, after almost 10 years, the truth prevailed. This means that there was nothing at the basis of the accusations against them and, after the Rome prosecutor's office had recognized it, the judge for preliminary investigations also definitively decreed it "." For Salvatore and his family they were years of heavy suffering and this is certainly a day of birth for them, even if nothing can erase the deep wounds inflicted by a judicial affair which, in many respects, will remain in the annals of history, not only in our country ", they conclude.
