A 30-year-old man, Mario La Pietra, was killed yesterday with a stab wound to the abdomen at the height of a family argument in San Severo , in the Foggia area.

The crime was committed by the wife, according to what the woman herself said, who reported to the police a "tragic accident" .

The woman, against whom no action has been taken, told her lawyer, Rosario Antonio De Cesare, that she was cooking when the tragedy occurred. She had her youngest child, a year old, in her arms - she said - and with the other hand she was holding a knife with which she was cutting onions to prepare dinner. An argument that had begun in the afternoon with her partner (the two had lived together for 12 years) then resumed , who allegedly grabbed her and violently pulled her hair; to prevent the child from falling to the floor, she wriggled free, "unintentionally" hitting the man in the abdomen with the knife .

According to the reconstruction provided by the woman's lawyer, "the man returned home yesterday afternoon around 5pm after work. There was an initial argument between the two over trivial matters during which the man threw his partner against the gate of the house. The woman suffered a wound to her right arm. The partner then left with their other daughter, a little girl of a few years old, returning home around 8pm, in a state of drunkenness. The argument continued, this time over financial issues and the tragedy occurred ."

The Carabinieri, together with the prosecutor on duty in Foggia, are investigating to crystallize precisely what happened and reconstruct the exact dynamics of the facts.

Pietra was taken to the hospital but the doctors could do nothing to save him. He is a bricklayer, she is a housewife: as of yesterday evening, there have been no interventions by the police or reports of mistreatment by either party.
