The Asti court acquitted Giovanni Ghiotti, the 55-year-old who last year confessed to the carabinieri that he had killed his 92-year-old seriously ill mother three years earlier in Piovà Massaia, Piedmont.

The prosecutor had instead asked for seven years in prison.

Great emotion during the hearing, with shortened procedure, in front of the reconstruction of the affair.

A witness described the victim as a seriously ill person, with bones that were slowly wearing out and a victim of extreme pain, despite the three operations to which she had been subjected.

Ghiotti had told the carabinieri that he had given her a large quantity of sleeping pills and then suffocated her with a pillow, precisely to put an end to those terrible sufferings.

"He has always been very reserved also regarding the suffering of his mother, - explained Ghiotti's lawyer, Marco Dapino - and we only learned many things from the testimonies. He has always been sober in his exposition, with a pain that involved everyone" .
