A large landslide hit the Aurelia road in western Genoa between Vesima and Arenzano before the Pizzo tunnel, blocking traffic in both directions towards Savona and the Ligurian capital.
Emergency vehicles are currently responding to check for any injured people. Firefighters, ANAS personnel, Genoa local police, and Arenzano Mayor Francesco Silvestrini are on site.
The firefighters intervened with the Genoa Multedo team, who conducted an initial verbal check, seeking the response of any people involved, as per the 'Urban Search and Rescue' protocol, the international system for searching under rubble.
In order to avoid the possible presence of people involved, the Multedo team leader requested the dog handlers, the earthmoving team, the light truck and the USAR-trained personnel who are carrying out the search under the landslide.
According to initial reports, one of the rockfall protection nets positioned along the rock face collapsed in an area that has been the site of other landslides in the past, including one in 2016 that injured two people. The only alternative route for traffic in Liguria is the A10 motorway.
