The Strike Guarantee Commission, which met today, deemed the general strike called for Friday, October 3, in solidarity with Israel's detention of activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla heading to Gaza, to be illegitimate .
The protest would in fact violate "the legal obligation to give notice, provided for by Law 146/90".
This is stated in a statement specifying that in the measure adopted, the Guarantor deemed "the unions' reference to Article 2, paragraph 7, which provides for the possibility of striking without notice only 'in cases of abstention from work in defense of the constitutional order or protest against serious events detrimental to the safety and security of workers,' to be irrelevant."
The Authority therefore sent an immediate warning to the trade unions, reminding them that "failure to comply will result, among other things, in the initiation of a conduct review procedure."
"I would have expected the unions not to call a general strike on Friday, at least on an issue they considered as important as Gaza. The long weekend and the revolution don't go together," said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni , commenting on the strike.
CGIL leader Maurizio Landini responded promptly: "The Prime Minister should show respect for those who pay taxes and those who work." And on the Guarantor's halt: "Our strike is fully legitimate because we did so in compliance with Law 146, which provides that in the event of constitutional violations or a threat to workers' health and safety, there is the possibility of striking without notice."
"In fact," Landini added, confirming Friday's strike, "we are challenging the Commission's resolution, and if it leads to sanctions against the union, we are ready to challenge those as well. " "Our constitutional norms are not being respected," Landini explained, "because our fellow citizens arrested by Israel in open waters are not being protected."
