Giancarlo Gutierrez, Carabinieri general and former Olympic knight, has died at the age of 92. A prominent figure in the Italian sports scene of the second half of the twentieth century, Gutierrez represented Italy at the Stockholm Olympics in 1956 in the eventing discipline, obtaining the best individual result for the Italian team.

Born on July 11, 1932 in Sardinia, he was the son of Antonio Gutierrez, also a protagonist of national and international equestrian sport.

Giancarlo Gutierrez began his sporting career at a very young age, winning the school show in 1948 with the Cagliari team. He later took part in the main international competitions, also distinguishing himself in show jumping and participating in numerous editions of the Nations Cup. His teammates included some of the most illustrious names in Italian equestrianism, such as Piero and Raimondo D'Inzeo, Salvatore Oppes and Lalla Novo.

At the Stockholm Olympics, riding Winston, he obtained 7th place individually out of 56 competitors and 5th in the team, together with Adriano Capuzzo and Giuseppe Molinari .

He also witnessed first-hand the national team debut of Graziano Mancinelli, with whom he competed in Lucerne in 1958.

Gutierrez also played a significant role in the valorization of Italian horses, particularly those of the de Nora stud , with which he had a family connection.

His competence and authority have earned him great respect in the sports and military environment. Appreciated by colleagues and friends for his human nature and great fairness, Gutierrez leaves a memory of himself as a reserved but deeply esteemed man.
