"Whoever knows, speak up." The city of Foggia is in shock over the death of Annibale "Dino" Carta, the 42-year-old personal trainer with no criminal record, killed on the street just steps from the city center by four gunshots.
Many on social media are remembering him and calling for justice. But above all, they are demanding the truth. "Someone saw, someone heard, someone knows they can make a difference," writes the Buon Samaritano Anti-Usury Foundation, active in the city. " The problem is that this information risks remaining stagnant, blocked by fear or the idea that it's better not to expose oneself. But silence doesn't help. It doesn't protect. It doesn't solve. It leaves everything hanging and prevents us from getting to the truth. This is why it's essential to get this message out. Because it can reach those who know and haven't yet spoken. And it can make a difference. It's not just a post. It's an act of responsibility ."
The victim's family's lawyer, Michele Vaira, joins in this appeal. In his letter, he appeals " to anyone with information useful to the investigation—even seemingly marginal information—to confidently contact the Carabinieri of the Foggia Provincial Command or, alternatively, this law firm. Every contribution can be crucial in bringing the perpetrator of this criminal act to justice and giving Dino's family the truth they deserve. The outpouring of affection and solidarity that has enveloped the Carta family testifies to what anyone who knew 'Dino' already knew: he was a young man with a flawless life, a hard worker, an exemplary husband and father, a person loved and respected by all who had the privilege of meeting him. The family places its fullest trust in the work of the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Foggia Court and the Carabinieri Provincial Command, confident that the ongoing investigations will shed full light on this terrible crime and identify the perpetrator, or perpetrators, of an act as brutal as it is inexplicable. Whoever committed this crime will pay the consequences, in the manner and timeframe determined by law and justice.
The investigation is focusing on a mysterious man on a bicycle. He is seen wearing a hood, passing Piazzale San Giuseppe Artigiano and heading toward Via Caracciolo in a scene recorded by a surveillance camera 40 seconds before the murder. It is 9:57 PM on Monday, April 13th. Forty seconds later, Carta will be killed by four small-caliber gunshots in the back. Confirmation comes from Foggia's prosecutor, Enrico Infante: "This is a factor that is gathering suspicion, but we are in the initial phase. It could be a valid hypothesis, but it requires time to verify."
The Carabinieri have been working since Monday evening to identify the killer of a father of two daughters, a well-liked man, an altar boy at his parish, and a dedicated volunteer. It's still unclear whether there was an argument between the victim and the shooter, or whether the shooter unexpectedly surprised the victim on the street while Carta was walking his dog, and then fled, dropping the gun's magazine. The Carabinieri recovered the magazine and are searching for fingerprints or biological traces.
Caution is being exercised over audio recorded by a surveillance camera in an apartment building about 30 meters from the crime scene and broadcast by Rai2's "Ore 14." It features four gunshots recorded at 9:58 PM. The time is perfectly consistent with the moments of the crime. Before the shots, fragments of dialogue are heard, likely unrelated to the murder, then another male voice says, "What are you doing? Are you shooting me?", followed by the sound of four consecutive shots. Immediately afterward, another male voice says, "I'll never bother you again. I swear, I swear." Carta's father-in-law, Antonio Traisci, immediately clarifies, "It's not Dino's voice." Other relatives are not so sure. Prosecutor Infante urges caution, emphasizing that "an audio expert report is needed to compare the voices to the victim's audio." These investigations require time and methods that are not available to the public and the media, and I understand their concern for rapid responses. We are fully committed, and we are working to provide answers.
