Careggi Hospital in Florence is paying the family of Fiorentina footballer Davide Astori €1.9 million in provisional compensation for his death, which will later be determined in civil court.
La Repubblica reports this regarding the consequences of the one-year suspended sentence for manslaughter against Professor Giorgio Galanti, a doctor, for the death of the footballer who suffered a heart attack on March 4, 2018 while he was at a pre-match retreat in Udine.
As required by law, to protect victims, in the event of medical malpractice compensation claims, hospitals pay the provisional amount to the injured parties. They can then seek recourse against the doctors—if convicted of gross negligence—who are usually covered by insurance policies for such cases. Giorgio Galanti followed Astori to Careggi Sports Medicine as a public health physician, an employee of the Florentine hospital.
The Court of Cassation confirmed the sum in its ruling, allocating, in detail, 490,000 euros to Francesca Fioretti and Vittoria Astori, the footballer's partner and daughter respectively, and the remaining 600,000 euros to the benefit of the footballer's parents and siblings.
