Rai Sport Director Paolo Petrecca has handed over his remit to Rai CEO Giampaolo Rossi and will step down at the end of the Milan-Cortina Olympics. Marco Lollobrigida will take over responsibility for Rai Sport on a transitional basis. The announcement was made in a Rai press release.

Petrecca's resignation - according to RAI sources - came after the journalist found himself at the center of controversy for errors and gaffes in his commentary of the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Olympics , in which he decided to take over from his colleague Auro Bulbarelli, who was forced to step aside after he let information slip about the video of the arrival of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

The Rai Sport editorial staff was also on the warpath, declaring its readiness to strike at the end of the Games. In support of the protest, a strike by journalists from the news and television news programmes was also held.

Petrecca had also found himself at the center of new protests over his management's "crazy" spending, which had soared, according to rumors leaked to the press after a meeting with the head of personnel, due to hiring, promotions, bonuses, and external consultancy.

Meanwhile, in his Instagram stories, after news of his resignation spread, he cited the Gospel of Matthew, posting an image of a fresco depicting the apostle with the coordinates "Mt 26:20-29." These coordinates contain Jesus' words during the Last Supper: "Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me."
