A strong earthquake, magnitude 5.1, was felt at 5:53 am in Reggio Calabria, with numerous reports also from Messina and other areas of Sicily and Calabria.
The epicenter, according to the website of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, was in the sea off the Ionian coast at a depth of 65 kilometers.
However, no damage has been reported, according to Domenico Costarella, head of the Calabria Region's Civil Protection Department, who is monitoring the investigation from the Operations Room in Catanzaro.
"Although the earthquake occurred at sea, which certainly helped," Costarella said, "I've ordered checks in the nearest areas, and there are no reports of damage. I've also spoken to the commissioner of the Reggio Calabria health authority, and there are no reports of damage at the Melito Porto Salvo hospital."
