Eight people are under investigation for the death of Matteo Ambu , the 46-year-old soldier killed on 21 October in Jesolo (Venice) by a falling branch that hit his car.

Prosecutor Stefano Strino – as reported by local newspapers and cited by Ansa – has opened a case for manslaughter, but the filing is largely a necessary step , to allow all interested parties to appoint a consultant for the tree's expert assessments. The investigations will clarify whether the collapse was accidental or whether the tree was suffering from undiagnosed conditions .

On November 6, the prosecutor will appoint Lucio Montecchio, a professor at the University of Padua who previously worked on the holm oak tree that collapsed in Piazzale Roma in 2025, as a consultant. Five people under investigation are from the Metropolitan City of Venice, which manages the provincial road. They are joined by the agronomist who classified the tree as low-risk, the owner of the maintenance company, and a manager from the Municipality of Jesolo .

Ambu, originally from Cagliari, lived in Ca' Savio and served in a barracks in Padua. He leaves behind a wife and two children. The funeral was held yesterday in Cavallino with military honors.
