The story of Marco Santacatterina, a 24-year-old university student who works as a delivery boy in a pizzeria in Thiene (Vicenza) over the weekend, raises discussions.
The young man asked the owner for two days off to go to Romagna to shovel mud after the flood and help the population. After Saturday and Sunday, when he returned to the pizzeria he was told that he could leave because, he explains, "there was no longer any need for me". And also: «Don't show up again», the message sent to him via WhatsApp by the owner to liquidate him.
«I was deeply struck by what happened in Emilia Romagna - he says - because they reminded me of the flood that devastated Vicenza in 2011. I was only 12 and I couldn't do anything, but now that I'm an adult I felt I had to do my part."
Marco contacted the Civil Protection of Bologna, and was directed to the Telegram channel where the availability of shoveling volunteers was collected. At that point, it was Thursday, he also involved his sister, Sara, and he organized himself to leave and reach the Cesena area. He sent a message to the owner of the pizzeria, sure he would understand: Saturday and Sunday off, to go shovel the mud. The employer's response instead froze him: "Don't show up again".
