Storm over the President of the Senate Ignazio La Russa , who in his meeting with the parliamentary press for the traditional exchange of greetings for the holidays, spoke among other things about the constitutional reform, defending the premiership with drawn sword.
«If I had had a magic wand I would have carried out the direct election of the President of the Republic», he said, «but since it is not up to me to decide I must say that the one implemented by the government is an excellent reform , minimally invasive, the minimum that could be done."
What unleashed the anger of the opposition was the passage on the Quirinale: «The constitutional powers of the President of the Republic will not be affected, no article concerning them will be modified. But there is a material Constitution that now gives him greater powers than those originally foreseen and a direct election of the Prime Minister could reduce the constant use of these powers.
