The ordinance took effect immediately. Compliance with it wasn't so immediate. The first day of the ban on swimming and aqua trekking in Ussassai's waterways and natural pools resulted in institutional mockery: signs were torn down and dozens of people were submerged.
"Enough! In light of this arrogance, I'm informing the prefect immediately," says Mayor Chicco Usai. He imagined the measure would cause pandemonium, but he didn't expect a swarm of people, defying the signs posted by the municipal police.
Not even the €500 fine could deter the swimmers who, yesterday morning, took a dip in the natural pools of the Sa Taula stream, between S'Arcada and the junction with the San Gerolamo stream, the Isara stream, and all the way to the Caddargiu de Sini pool.
The decision to shut everything down came after the continuous invasions of recent weeks —triggered by a social media phenomenon—which put the delicate natural balance of the area at risk.
