There are over 11,000 - 11,425 to be exact - farms run by women in Sardinia, representing over 24% of the total.

This is what emerges from the Coldiretti Sardinia elaborations on the data of the 2021 census on the occasion of March 8th.

The female presence in the countryside is growing in percentage confirming the trend that already emerged in the previous census.

In 2000, in fact, they represented 19.8% of the total of Sardinian farms, while in 2010 they had risen to 23.9%, which became 24.3% in 2021 (at national level they represent 28%). In Italy, according to the ranking drawn up by the Observatory for female entrepreneurship of Unioncamere and InfoCamere, companies led by women in agriculture surprisingly enter the top 5 of sectors with the highest rate of feminization, after various services, health , education and accommodation-catering.

"Women are making the most of the opportunities offered by the 2001 Orientation law," says Elisabetta Secci, the regional manager of Coldiretti Donne Impresa Sardegna, who also runs a multifunctional farm.

«The presence of women, in fact, has grown above all in the new food and environmental education activities with schools, nursery gardens, educational farms, rural pet-therapy courses, educational vegetable gardens but also in precision and low-impact agriculture environmental up to the presence in the direct sales markets of Campagna Amica as well as in the agritourism. Multifunctional companies are also those that are facing and resisting the economic crisis better».

«The women who have chosen agriculture - highlights Coldiretti - demonstrate the ability to combine the challenge with the market and respect for the environment, the protection of the quality of life, attention to social issues, in contact with nature together with valorisation of typical local products and biodiversity».
