In Kiev, the selections for the Eurovision Song Contest took place in the underground station which was transformed into a television studio for the occasion.

In Ukraine, metro stops are among the safest places, recalls the BBC, and have been used as air-raid shelters since Russia invaded the country on 24 February.

The pop duo Tvorchi won the selection and with the song "Heart of Steel" they are the first to be confirmed for the next edition of the singing competition to be held in 2023 in Liverpool.

"We will try to do everything to present Ukraine with dignity," said one of the band members Andrew Hutuliak.

During their performance the dancers wore gas masks while nuclear warning signs and lyrics such as: "Don't be afraid to speak your mind" appeared on the screens.

The last edition of the festival was won by the Kalush Orchestra of Ukraine, so it would have been up to Ukraine to host the event, but due to the ongoing war the event will take place in the United Kingdom .
