The Chamber of Commerce 's research office has published its analysis of trends in the island and in the North in particular, in terms of imports and exports.

In detail, sales from the island abroad in 2023 recorded a decrease of 2.2 billion euros compared to 2022, while international purchases suffered an even more significant reduction, equal to 2.6 billion euros. However, despite this decline, the balance between exports and imports showed an improvement compared to the previous year, with a deficit of almost 3 billion euros.

The export of refined products is worth less. On the export side, refined petroleum products are worth 5.6 billion euros, 2 billion less than the previous year (-26.2%), and represent 83% of overall foreign sales.

«In addition to the oil sector, at a Sardinian level, there are interesting development sectors such as boating in northern Sardinia. In addition to the general stability of historical supply chains such as the dairy sector which find space as usual on the US market and are becoming established in other markets", comments the president of the Sassari Chamber of Commerce and the regional Unioncamere, Stefano Visconti.

Northern Sardinia

Imports are decreasing, especially of coal. That's about 160 million less than in 2022, with an annual loss of 18.6%. 43% of the value of imported products, equal to 303 million euros, is represented by coal. The import dynamics of which change scenario: no longer imported from Russia, for obvious reasons, but rather from Australia and Indonesia.

Fish and shellfish are worth 40 million. Data down compared to 2022 (-31%). Among the main trading partners for these products, Ecuador represents a value of 11.5 million euros, albeit in a downward trend. Imports from France are growing (10 million), and those from Spain are decreasing.

The dairy supply chain is opening up to new markets. As regards exports from northern Sardinia, these amount to approximately 235 million, a very slight decrease compared to the previous year. The figure is among the highest in recent years. Around 40% of Sardinian products sold abroad are represented by products from the dairy industry. Over 80% is absorbed by the US market for a value of just under 75 million euros. Then Canada and Germany. The appreciation of dairy products from northern Sardinia is also growing on the Swiss market, which will purchase over 2 million euros in 2023, a figure significantly higher than the 800 thousand euros in 2022.

From northern Sardinia to the Caymans. A real boom, however, for ships and boats. We go from three million euros in 2020 to 26 million last year. The growth clearly refers to the new presence among the commercial partners of the Cayman Islands where, in fact, over 7.5 million euros worth of boats are destined.
