The motoring world says goodbye to Gil de Ferran, winner of the Indianapolis 500 in 2003 and two-time champion of the Cart championship in the USA.

The Brazilian driver suffered a heart attack at just 56 years old.

According to US media, de Ferran was struck by an illness while competing with his son at the Concours Club in Opa-locka, Florida.

De Ferran – who was also a consultant for the McLaren Formula 1 team – was remembered with messages of condolence from many motorsport protagonists, including the CEO of F1, Stefano Domenicali: «I am very shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Gil de Ferran. He was an incredible person and a true champion, and we will all miss him." "Everyone at McLaren Racing is deeply saddened to learn that we have lost a beloved member of our McLaren family - writes the F1 team - because Gil was an important and integral part of our team".
