A quick call from the control room to review, update and redefine the objectives of the green chemistry project in Sardinia. This is the request sent by the President of the Region to Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

Christian Solinas, in his letter, underlines how it is "necessary and urgent" that the operators concerned "be bound by the commitments made 11 years ago and not yet fulfilled " and also that "investments are restarted".

On May 26, 2011, the Sardinian governor recalls, the Protocol on green chemistry was signed by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, a document which gave way to the industrial conversion of the Porto Torres chemical plant. Built 2 of the 7 planned plants, with a long adjustment phase, the companies Versalis (Eni) and Novamont , owners of the plants through the Matrica joint venture, "entered into a declared and manifest conflict, which led to the launch of a arbitration, generating an overall stalemate in investments and interlocutions - writes Solinas -. The industrial area of Sassari and Porto Torres still has all the characteristics to become the site of development of the green and circular economy on which the relaunch of the country is based ".

"The vision expressed, the radical change in production, from Petrochemical to Green Chemistry, were and are fundamental for the relaunch of the territory , of Sardinia and of the country, as they are capable of reducing dependence on hydrocarbons in the production of materials, in favor of biodegradable and environmentally sustainable products - continues the governor - The relaunch of the project and the investments that would result from it, also in relation to the professionalism that in recent years, on this type of production, Sardinia has been able to create, can really affect the depth of the production system, also through the integration of a short supply chain with the agricultural and forestry sector, above all thanks to the advancement of soilless cultivation technology, which would allow the entire requirement of raw materials to be produced in Sardinia ".

This is why, according to the president, the parties involved could “reap great benefits from a renewed agreement ”.

In conclusion, the request to the Prime Minister is that of an intervention "so that the necessary discussions with Eni are initiated and the control room is convened".
