Following Emmanuel Macron's decision, calls for the Italian government to recognize the State of Palestine are multiplying.

But for Giorgia Meloni the time is not yet ripe.

"I believe that recognizing the State of Palestine, without there being a State of Palestine, could actually be counterproductive to the objective ," the prime minister declared. "I've said this several times, including in Parliament. I've said it to the Palestinian Authority itself, and I've also said it to Macron. If something that doesn't exist is recognized on paper, the problem risks appearing solved, when it isn't ." She added: "As someone who is very much in favor of the State of Palestine, I'm not in favor of recognizing it before a process for its constitution has begun."

And while the opposition accuses the government of not having a clear and courageous position like the one taken by France, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani is calling for recognition from the other side as well: "Italy supports the two-people, two-state solution," argues the Deputy Prime Minister and leader of Forza Italia, "but recognition of the new Palestinian state must occur simultaneously with their recognition of the State of Israel ."
