«Forty years ago Enrico Berlinguer died, an esteemed and popular political personality, capable of courageous choices, which strengthened the foundations of the Republic and consolidated the democratic growth of the country». The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, wrote this in a message on the anniversary of the death of the great politician from Sassari, who died on 11 June 1974, following a cerebral haemorrhage which struck him during a rally in Padua .
«Berlinguer - the head of state still recalls - was leader of the Italian communist movement in a particularly difficult decade which saw him committed to defending the Constitution and democratic life from subversive attacks and terrorist assaults. The concern for peace and international cooperation led him to propose increasingly autonomous paths and choices, in the interest of the people. His contribution, both ideal and cultural - concludes Mattarella - contributed to associating the workers who recognized themselves in the PCI with that path of European integration that Italy was able to follow as a protagonist".
