The Court of Cassation has declared inadmissible the appeal by former Torres Calcio vice president Antonio Maria Carboni against the ruling of the Sassari Court of Appeal which, upholding the first-instance judge's decision, sentenced the then-manager to four years in prison for aggravated extortion against Andrea Baeli, the Roman businessman who attempted to purchase shares in the Sassari-based sports club in 2016. The Supreme Court's ruling thus makes Carboni's conviction final.
The judges deemed the appeal inadmissible "because it was proposed with generic and, in any case, manifestly unfounded reasons."
The case concerns negotiations that began and ended stormily in late 2016 for the transfer of ownership of Torres, which was then in dire financial straits. Entrepreneur Andrea Baeli had been summoned to the Rossoblu headquarters by then-president Daniele Piraino to finalize the purchase of the company shares and the transfer of ownership. There , a group of hooded ultras threatened and assaulted him, and stole his cell phone . The one who incited the troublemakers, as the judges ruled, was none other than the vice president in office at the time.
Carboni's lawyers argued that the Court of Appeal's ruling was flawed by several contradictions. These complaints were refuted point by point by the Supreme Court of Cassation, which declared the appeal inadmissible, emphasizing that Carboni had participated in the intimidation of Baeli: "He had joined the fans and coordinated their actions, aimed at forcing the victim, with repeated threats lasting two hours, to tear up the contractual documents relating to the transfer of shares . He personally photographed the climax with his cell phone, demonstrating his contribution and the purpose of the action."
