Cagliari, 1970s. There were no big events, no trendy clubs. But there were young people, the desire to be together and music, which united more than anything else. All it took was a turntable, some vinyl and a room full of kids to transform an ordinary evening into a memorable party. It is from this atmosphere that the legend of Giulio Massidda was born, one of the most iconic DJs of the Cagliari scene, a pioneer of the night capable of making entire generations dance.

Giulio passed away today at the Brotzu in Cagliari after a long illness, leaving behind not only the memory of his unforgettable evenings, but also a musical legacy that has trained dozens of young talents.

In the 1970s, parties in Cagliari were a home affair. There were no clubs or discos, so the kids would gather in shifts at home, bringing with them only a plate of vinyl and a great desire to have fun. And it was precisely in those improvised evenings that Giulio found his calling. "We started at eight in the evening and finished at four in the morning," he said . His ability to select the right songs at the right time quickly made him a point of reference for the city's youth.

Then came the first venues: the Lido, the Fiera, the Kilton, the Aquarium in Torre delle Stelle . New spaces that finally gave the city the chance to experience music in a different, more professional, more engaging way.

Giulio, together with names like Filippo Lantini, Dario Prefumo and Sandro Murru, was among the protagonists of that change, transforming the Cagliari night into a point of reference for those seeking emotions to the rhythm of music .

In the 2000s, by then a physical education teacher at the Bacaredda Institute, he understood that music could be much more than just entertainment. When the school principal asked him for an idea to get the kids interested in studying, he proposed a DJ course. A gamble that proved to be a winning one: many students signed up, discovering through Giulio's lessons a world of passion, technique and creativity.

Some of those kids, who started out in a class at Bacaredda, then found work as DJs in Ibiza, turning a hobby into a career. And so, even after his last night at Cormorano in Costa Smeralda in 1992, Giulio continued to make the new generations dance, in a different way but with the same spirit as always.

Today, music has become more digital, venues change, tastes evolve. But there is something that never changes: its power to bring people together, to create bonds, to leave a mark . And this is what Giulio Massidda has done throughout his life. Cagliari has lost one of its nightlife protagonists, but his legacy remains. In the memories of those who danced to his DJ sets , in the young people who discovered a passion thanks to him, in the city that has learned to live music as a collective experience.
