Farewell to Franz Beckenbauer : the legendary German footballer has died at the age of 78 .

The former Germany coach, who won the World Cup in Italy in 1990, had had health problems for some time . Between 2016 and 2017 he had undergone two heart operations, while in 2019 he was struck by serious eye problems.

The news of his death , which occurred yesterday, was communicated today by his family to the German agency Dpa .

As a player, world champion in 1974 and twice Golden Ball (in 1972 and 1976), he was the icon of Bayern Munich in the seventies, managing to win three European Cups in the space of just three years . Unforgettable are the images from the Seventies in which three times, wearing the red Bayern shirt, he raised the big-eared Cup to the sky.
