Sara Curtis sets a new world record in the 50-meter backstroke and wins gold at the European Swimming Championships in Paris.

Curtis finished with a time of 26:56, ahead of France's Mary-Ambre Moluh (27:06) and Britain's Lauren Cox (27:15). The 19-year-old Italian performed exceptionally well, accelerating in the final 15 meters and finishing with a world record.

"I'm truly delighted," she said to the Rai microphones. "It's hard to handle the emotions of yesterday's record. Yesterday I struggled to fall asleep. I really tried to accelerate the last 15 meters. It's crazy. I'm happy. A dream, a huge goal. My parents? If I could take them to the podium, I would. I can't wait to hug them."
