England manager Gareth Southgate resigns, two days after defeat against Spain in the second European final lost in a row.

Although his contract expired at the end of December and the English Football Association seemed intent on renewing it at least until the next World Cup, Southgate decided to end his eight years at the helm of the Three Lions. Not an absolute surprise, since on the eve of the expedition to Germany, it was the coach himself who made winning the European Championship a condition for his future stay.

In recent days, many commentators and former players had invited him to take a step back in light of the national team's latest performances. England, despite their run to the final, have never convinced in their European matches. Hence Southgate's decision to resign with immediate effect.
