The other regions of Italy will abandon polluting coal starting from 31 December 2025, while the island remains anchored to fossil fuels because it does not have methane (unique in the country), it lacks a certain and strong production system. Therefore the phase out – said the Minister of the Environment Gilberto Pichetto Fratin – will take place (if all goes well) «between 2026 and 2028».

The unions were pushing for the Prime Ministerial Decree to be signed before the elections. The fear was that, after many delays, with the change in leadership of the Region the game would start again. But the decree did not reach the finish line and the secretaries of CGIL and Filctem Fausto Durante and Francesco Garau were very harsh : «There was no due commitment nor probably the will to bridge the gap that separates Sardinia, the only region in Italy and of Europe not to have the methane source, from the rest of Italy. The methanization plan was essentially boycotted."

The new governor Alessandra Todde intervenes: «When I am officially installed, I will call all the parties to the table because the energy issue is an absolute priority for the Sardinians and Sardinia».
