"The democratic people is alive, there and is ready to get up with a clear line". These were the first words as the new secretary of the Democratic Party spoken last night by Elly Schlein ( WHO IS ), who won the primaries by beating the favorite Stefano Bonaccini with over 53% of the preferences .

Schlein is the first and youngest woman to lead the party in its history.

Over a million people took part in the vote.

"He will succeed where I didn't", said the outgoing secretary, Enrico Letta.

And congratulations also came to Schlein from his challenger Bonaccini: «An applause, now great responsibility».

Best wishes also from the exponents of the center-right – such as Giorgia Meloni and Matteo Salvini – as well as from the leader of the M5S League, Giuseppe Conte .

«Congratulations to Elly Schlein and congratulations to the Democratic Party for the mobilization of its voters in the congress. I hope that the election of a young woman to lead via del Nazareno can help the left to look forward and not backwards», the words of the premier commenting on the result of the dem vote.

"Now united to win again", Schlein reiterated instead, who in his speech promised that the Democratic Party will now be a "problem for the Meloni government".
