Electoral law: Sardinia loses one seat: "Another serious disadvantage."
The number of elected representatives to the Chamber is linked to the populationPer restare aggiornato entra nel nostro canale Whatsapp
The new electoral law has just been approved. But for Sardinia, ahead of the 2027 general election, a spectre immediately resurfaces: the real risk of losing a seat in the Chamber of Deputies, where the island's elected representatives will drop from 11 to 10 (five remain in the Senate). All this is due to the declining birth rate. The number of elected representatives in Montecitorio is, in fact, linked to demographics.
Fratelli d'Italia Senator Antonella Zedda weighed in on the issue: "We cannot lose Sardinian representatives. It would be a further serious disadvantage. The alarm was raised in the previous legislature, but nothing has changed. This is something we Sardinians know well. In the electoral law for the regional council, demographically disadvantaged areas like Ogliastra, Sulcis, and Medio Campidano lose elected representatives to Cagliari and Gallura, for example. Yet no political force has so far committed to changing the law, establishing the principle of territoriality, which would guarantee greater protection for the most disadvantaged areas."
Meanwhile, Democratic Party Senator Marco Meloni announced the presentation of a constitutional bill to ensure that Sardinia's quota of representation in Parliament is based on 2021, the period prior to the reform that significantly reduced the number of elected representatives in both chambers of Parliament. "I hope," he said, "to find broad consensus on this text."
