Sardinians voting to renew the European Parliament and, in 27 towns, to elect mayor and new city council .

Polling stations open until 11pm, tomorrow (Sunday 9 June) they will reopen from 7am to 11pm.

The 27 municipalities in which administrative elections are also held: Cagliari, Monserrato, Sinnai, Sassari and Alghero with more than 15 thousand inhabitants, the others are Onanì, Ortueri, Sarule, Villagrande Strisaili, Bosa, Magomadas, Sini, Sorradile, Castelsardo, Golfo Aranci , Illorai, Putifigari, Sorso, Villanova Monteleone, Calasetta, Esterzili, Genoni, Guasila, Samatzai, San Gavino Monreale, Sant'Anna Arresi, Serrenti.

In Cagliari, four out of five mayoral candidates voted: the first was Massimo Zedda from Campo Largo, in section 513 of Via Venezia. Then Emanuela Corda (Alternativa), at the seat of the Buccari Nautical Institute. Then Claudia Ortu , candidate of the popular Cagliari - Classy Alternative list, who cast her vote at seat 405 inside the Eleonora d'Arborea teaching institute in via Palomba. And finally Giuseppe Farris , supported by the CiviCa 2024 Movement. Alessandra Zedda , candidate of the centre-right, will vote tomorrow, Sunday, at 9.30 at the Pacinotti school.

In Sassari, among the first to vote was Giuseppe Mascia (large field) who, around 6pm, went to the polling station set up at the elementary school in via Savoia. In Alghero , the two mayoral candidates have already voted, Raimondo Cacciotto for the broad camp and Marco Tedde for the centre-right .

In Sardinia there are 1,844 sections, 1.3 million Sardinians called to vote for the European elections, around 415 thousand for the administrative elections. The counting for the European elections will begin immediately after the polls close, while we will have to wait until 2pm on Monday 10 June for the counting for the municipal elections to begin .

The unknown abstention plays a crucial role. Five years ago at the European elections the turnout was 54.5% in Italy, in Sardinia even 36.25%. In the municipal elections of Cagliari it was 51.71%, in Sassari it was 54.84%.

In municipalities with more than 15 thousand inhabitants (Cagliari, Sassari, Alghero, Sinnai, Monserrato) you must obtain 50% +1 of the votes to be elected, otherwise the two most voted candidates will go to the run-off on 22 and 23 June . In small towns with only one candidate, at least 40% of eligible voters must go to the polls for the latter to be elected. Otherwise the Municipality is placed under commissionership.

European Chapter. The island has not brought one of its deputies to Europe since 2014, disadvantaged as it is by the constituency that benefits Sicilians due to the demographic gap of almost three million inhabitants. In the next European Parliament there will be 720 deputies, Italy elects 76, the Islands constituency 8.
