«Sardinia needs an extraordinary efficiency plan and not new invasions with pharaonic costs and infinite construction times and from which, out of 10 liters of water, just 5 reach the taps».

This was underlined by the leaders of Confagricoltura Nuoro-Ogliastra , taking a position on the dramatic water crisis caused by the drought which is putting the countryside and towns on the coast of Baronia, Bassa Gallura and Ogliastra to the test.

The association, in a note, asks regional politics to also include agricultural trade organizations in the extraordinary table for drought.

The objective, explains the president of the organization Michele Ena , is to "discuss actions to combat the devastating situation affecting crops and the water and fodder supply for animals".

«With the water restriction plan and the cutting of irrigation for agriculture – continues Ena – the 2024 production season is severely compromised . Now it is necessary to systematize all possible interventions in obtaining water resources. The Region will immediately launch an intervention plan for agriculture, to meet the drinking water needs which will increase seven or eight times with seaside tourism."

Confagricoltura also puts down on paper the possible solutions in the short term. That is to say:

  • reduction of water waste on obsolete pipes dedicated to agricultural companies
  • interventions to repair leaks in neighboring countries
  • works for the water transfer from the Liscia reservoir to the municipality of San Teodoro
  • drilling of new wells
  • deployment of tankers to supply livestock farms

As regards long-term interventions , the association urges the creation of a permanent body of experts "to define new intervention strategies against extreme climate events".

«We also need to intervene – concludes Ena – on the repair of pipelines, promote good practices in irrigation management and implement projects for interconnections between reservoirs. It is extremely important to recover the raw water treated by purifiers for non-domestic use and to start feasibility analyzes on the topic of desalination" .
