The Sardinian Domus de Janas is proceeding rapidly towards the goal of becoming a UNESCO world heritage site.

Another, decisive step towards official recognition has arrived from the National Commission, with the dossier which will now be sent to Paris for the attention of the UN Agency for Education, Science and Culture to have the definitive green light for entry in the prestigious list of "fairy houses" dug into the rock (in reality very ancient underground environments intended for burial), unique which characterizes many places on the island.

All to the satisfaction of the promoting committee led by Cesim - Centro Studi Identità e Memoria , supported by the Sardinia Region and the Network of Municipalities of the Domus de janas, which involves 37 administrations with Alghero as the leader.

The Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano was also happy with the result: «I am pleased that the UNESCO National Commission accepted the proposal and decided to present the Domus de Janas for inclusion in the World Heritage List. The 26 sites preserve a historical-cultural testimony of exceptional universal value which well illustrates the richness of the Sardinian heritage ", stated the minister.

«The path towards UNESCO recognition is proceeding quickly . It was a long but satisfying job , made possible by the operational synergies between different entities: the Italian Ministry of Culture, the Universities of Sassari and Cagliari, the Municipalities, non-profit associations, small and medium-sized enterprises", underlines Giuseppa Tanda , president of Cesim leading the promoting committee.

For Alessandro Cocco , councilor for culture of the municipality of Alghero, leader of the network of municipalities, «the UNESCO candidacy of the Sardinian prehistoric archaeological heritage has always been an ambitious choice, an opportunity for development and promotion for the whole of Sardinia . As the leading municipality we are really proud of the acceptance of the dossier. In recent years we have worked hard to reach this moment, which was also possible thanks to the closeness of the Ministry of Culture."

The dossier on the Domus de Janas, as mentioned, now flies to Paris, for examination by the consultative bodies of the World Heritage Committee, which will evaluate the conformity of the proposed criteria with the UNESCO guidelines.

The final verdict is expected in early 2025.
