An innovative and non-invasive technique for Sardinian patients on dialysis . In the Radiology of the Santissima Trinità hospital in Cagliari, the first operation in Sardinia, and among the first in Italy, to package the arteriovenous fistula for hemodialysis using an endovascular procedure was performed.

Compared to the traditional surgical technique, times have been reduced from 90 to 30 minutes, with the day surgery patient being discharged after a short period of observation. One week after the operation everyone is fine.

In Sardinia the number of new patients requiring dialysis is among the highest in Italy. Every year, on average, 286 more cases are recorded. To perform the therapy, it is necessary to create an arteriovenous fistula, which creates a direct connection between the artery and the vein (often of the upper limb), thus allowing access for hemodialysis and ensuring adequate blood flow to the extracorporeal circuit .

This procedure is performed surgically and requires a short hospital stay. However, with innovative devices it is possible, using ultrasound guidance, to cannulate a vein in the arm and create the fistula in a minimally invasive and totally percutaneous way. A technique that has consolidated the synergy between the Interventional Radiology section led by Stefano Marcia and the Nephrology directed by Stefano Murtas, with the collaboration of Anesthesia and Resuscitation of which Mario Cardia is responsible.
